World Diabetes Day takes place on the 14th November 2018, a day when millions of people around the world come together to raise awareness of the disease.
Je m’appelle Diabetic marks Rosie Vincent’s second performance to explore her identity as a Type 1 Diabetic. Je m’appelle Diabetic is a live art performance representing her personal relationship towards her condition from her diagnosis through to now. The work combines ritual, projection, and object to produce rich images and serene atmospheres to celebrate the chronic condition as part of her identity. This piece reconnects the medical waste that is produced by the condition with her own body; honouring the medication as the means to keep her alive despite its hostile appearance. Just as Rosie Vincent’s previous works have presented the beauty in all wasting bodies, Je m’appelle Diabetic presents the beauty in the resilience of her own diseased body.
About the artist:
Rosie Vincent is an artist who seeks to combine visual art and performance to present the natural beauty of the world around us. Her work aims to challenge our instinctual aversions towards the wasting body, the unwell body and the diseased body. Despite these bold desires, Rosie Vincent’s work is characterised by tranquillity, calmness and acceptance; inviting the viewer to enter her ritualistic world. Rosie Vincent has created durational and installation performances with hair and body waste with her most recent performance featuring a photography and live art exhibition of vomit encountered on the streets of London. Through creating rich visual art from waste materials and the body’s rejection, her work celebrates these processes as signs of the living body.
