#motivate2create: How we’re working internationally on adult education

We’re proud to announce our involvement in the EU-funded Motivate 2 Create programme, which promotes inclusion in adult education through artistic and cultural social action projects.

Here at Rosetta Arts, we have a history of reaching those who otherwise have little access to the rich and transformative benefits of the arts and education through creative courses, workshops and experiences, so we’re excited to partner with others working in this space across Europe for this innovative project.

We’re one of six partners from five countries – the UK, Spain, Croatia, Italy and Slovakia.

What is Motivate 2 Create?

Motivate 2 Create (#motivate2createEU) is all about combining community arts practices with social action projects. With our artists and partners, we will create and test out learning resources that can be applied to different adult and community education settings, both in Newham and internationally.

Its purpose is to foster creativity and nurture talent through learning methods that draw out the creativity of diverse groups, acting as a catalyst for change within a community through ‘place based’ neighbourhood development.

In doing so, #motivate2createEU addresses three key priorities of the Erasmus+ programme:

  • Skills development and inclusion through creativity and the arts
  • Common values, civic engagement and participation
  • Social Inclusion

Why now?

There is an urgent need in Europe to overcome social forces and tendencies that lead to conflict, division and social alienation. Across the generations, in communities most affected by the economic downturn and the isolation forced upon them by the Covid-19 pandemic, people with creative talent are feeling marooned and isolated.

The Covid-19 crisis has led to many people in the cultural and creative sectors losing their employment due to the consequences of lockdown and restrictions.

Both the sector and those it supports through artistic and cultural expression have a critical role to play in the post-pandemic recovery in society.

What are Motivate 2 Create’s goals?

By the end of the project, #motivate2createEU will lead to:

  • an innovative and transferable method and practice for creative approaches in non-formal adult education settings
  • an interactive, e-learning environment for creative and cultural educators, community developers and community leaders
  • accessible, digital resources from an online platform for enhancing social capital, social cohesion, integration and democratic participation

Motivate 2 Create in numbers

  • The 24-month project will test and validate the approach with a international community
  • It will directly engage with 30 community learning practitioners
  • 150 adults of all ages, including young adults (18-25), with a particular focus on disadvantaged communities and underrepresented groups will be invited to take part in the programme

Participants will come together in teams to determine, design, plan, implement and review social action projects. They will be supported through the #motivate2createEU methodology to explore how creativity, multiculturalism and stimulating intercultural engagement can equip and empower people to be successful innovators in their environment to unveil opportunity and tackle unprecedented societal challenges.

The #motivate2createEU project is co-financed by the ERASMUS+ programme of the European Union, and will be implemented from June 2021 to May 2023.
