Art in Mind at Vicarage Lane

April 2016 – June 2016

Art in Mind was a series of artistic interventions specifically designed for older adults and those in the early stages of dementia. Through observational exercises, group discussion and light touch creative activities such as painting, drawing, pottery, and textiles, we aimed to enhance participants’ quality of life, improve their general well-being and encourage social interaction.

At the Mind Cafe on Vicarage Lane in the London Borough of Newham, artistic practitioner Ravinder Atwal worked with a group of elderly people who frequented the cafe as part of their daily health and wellness routines, some of whom were in early stage of dementia. Ravinder created a Memory Boxes activity for participants which involved collecting objects and items of significance as well as other art pieces created during the weekly sessions. Whilst collecting the items, life stories were shared and the senses stimulated through the use of textures, colours and shapes.
