Collaboration in action: Young Makers + Tandem Europe

May 2017 – June 2017

Our Young Makers Enterprise Programme for 13-18 year olds from the borough of Newham has been developed to ensure our homegrown talent are given early access to the skills, knowledge and opportunities to have flourishing careers in the arts and creative industries.

Their recent collaboration with Tandem Europe, a programme that supports experimental collaborations between cultural change makers from the EU member states, gave the 2017 cohort of Young Makers the opportunity to take part in digital storytelling workshops with new media artist Shanaz Gulzar.

The project involved Young Makers participating in a workshop entitled On Civil Courage and Ethics, run by Rasha Shaaban, Project Manager at National Museum of World Culture in Sweden. The workshop further developed their research on the theme of Heroes: Real and Imagined, which focussed on exploring those values practiced by heroes who inspire our Young Makers. The resulting films they produced with Shanaz Gulzar were imaginings of these values interspersed with footage from their everyday lives to create short abstract films.

The series of films have been published worldwide for World Refugee Day 2018, have been screened at the MitOst Festival, 4-7 October 2018, Athens and at the International Quarter London’s ‘Sparkly Nights’ event, Stratford, October 2018.
