We worked with Evelina London’s Children Hospital – a specialist NHS hospital in London – to deliver a programme developed to give patients and young visitors an opportunity to engage with creative thinking and practical activities inspired by mosaic design and the work of Afro Caribbean artists such as Yinka Shonibare.
Running over 7 weeks at the school premises, 35 children participated directly in the Mosaic Project, three to nine children attended each session, ranging in ages from 1 to 14 years old. Many of the children who attended were patients or siblings of patients and for most part of the project different children attended each week.
Through informal, interactive creative learning activities, participants had space to explore ideas and work together to create a larger mosaics piece. Such a holistic approach to making allowed for participation in a relaxed environment, enjoying the process at their own pace; this meant children could work on individual pieces whilst also contributing collaboratively to a larger work. The children, parents, hospital staff and Rosetta facilitators were so pleased with the finished works they decided to display them permanently at Evelina hospital.
