In 2019, to mark Holocaust Memorial Day 2019 and 75 years since the liberation of Auschwitz Birkenau and 25 years since the genocide in Bosnia, Rosetta Arts teamed up with the London Borough of Newham for a special commemorative event.
An exhibition of artwork created by local artists, Ani Passarelli and Laura Iosifescu, and Newham schoolchildren was displayed at Stratford Town Hall.
Year 6 children from Lathom Primary School in East Ham worked with Big Ideas to decorate stones with messages to people who have suffered genocide. The stones were inspired by the custom of leaving a stone or pebble when visiting Jewish graves. Some of the stones decorated by the young people and those from around the country were selected to be used in the foundations of a new Holocaust Memorial and learning centre.
Year 6 children from Ranelagh Primary School explored the items people had taken away from them as they were put into concentration camps. They considered what the items could tell us about a person’s life and drew them using their imagination.
Take a look at some of the photos of the young people’s artwork and the event below.
