Explore your creativity and our borough’s rich history this Newham Heritage Month

Newham Heritage Month is here! The festival, which launched on Saturday 1 May, will take place until 31 May. This year’s theme is Shops, Docks and Factories and the programme features live participatory events and online activities taking place across the borough to showcase the rich and diverse heritage of Newham.

We’re so excited to be a part of this year’s Newham Heritage Month. Four of the artists on our Artist Accelerator Scheme – Sylvia Morgado, Ada Jusic, Larissa De Filippo and Sylvie Belbouab – are leading workshops as part of the festival. Below are details of their workshops.

Writing About Cody Dock: Online Creative Workshop with artist Sylvia Morgado – Thursday 6 May 5-6 pm (Online)

Join Sylvia Morgado in this creative writing workshop and try your hand at a collective poem. This online workshop created for young participants aged 14+, will explore the history and heritage of the factories that once resided at Cody Dock.

Illustrating Cody Dock: Online Workshop with artist Ada Jusic – Thursday 13 May 5-6 pm (Online)

In this online illustration workshop with Ada Jusic, aimed at young participants aged 14+, will explore the history and heritage of the factories that once resided at Cody Dock.

Participants will design a poster that contrasts the historical and contemporary lives of people who lived and worked in and around Cody Docks.

Listening at Cody Dock: Sound Workshop with artist Larissa de Filippo – Thursday 20 May 5-6 pm (Online)

This online workshop created for young participants aged 14+, will explore the history and heritage of the factories that once resided at Cody Dock.

Join visual artist Larissa De Filippo for a one-hour workshop using sound as a point of inspiration to explore the heritage and history of Cody Docks. This project celebrates women of the 19th Century who worked at the Gas Light and Coke Company in Bromley-by-Bow.

Photography at Cody Dock: Workshop with artist Sylvie Belbouab – Thursday 27 May 5-6 pm at Cody Dock

Grab your camera or phone and join photographer Sylvie Belbouab for this in-person workshop as she guides you, following the river Lea to discover the seven gasholders in Twelvetrees Crescent and the Gaslight and Coke company memorial garden.

This workshop is aimed at young participants aged 14+.
