How we celebrated community at Newham Unlocked Festival: Plaistow and Green Street

We had the most incredible time producing Newham Unlocked Festival: Plaistow and Green Street 2021 and closing out the festival with two landmark events on the Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th October.

Throughout the month-long festival we:

  • Collaborated with more than 300 artists and performers
  • Worked with more than 50 local businesses and community groups
  • Engaged thousands of local residents
  • Held 1 gallery exhibition, featuring 4 women Newham-based artists
  • Delivered 4 community art workshops that enabled local residents to explore screen-printing and geometrical pattern making
  • Produced 1 digital art trail map and window art exhibition showcasing almost 100 artworks from talented Newham residents and artists
  • Organised 8 guided art trail walks, bringing local people together to explore art and their local area
  • Produced 1 online art exhibition, showcasing work submitted by established artists and local people
  • Published 1 online video tutorial on geometric pattern making for shielding residents

Sanaz Amidi, Chief Executive, Rosetta Arts, said: “Newham Unlocked Festival: Plaistow and Green Street was a resounding success. It was a huge privilege to bring together more than 300 Newham artists and performers, dozens of local businesses and thousands of local residents to showcase and celebrate all the wonderful things that Newham has to offer.

“Community is a key part of what makes Newham great and at Rosetta Arts, we’re proud to have been able to work with ours so closely to produce this spectacular event. A huge thank you to the festival’s artistic director Jeanefer Jean-Charles, Newham Council and everyone who made it possible and to all those that came along and enjoyed the programme we put together.”

I loved the fact that aspiring artists were given a platform to showcase their talent. – Prab, volunteer

I feel connected to my community, everyone came together. These events are important, good to increase footfall in the market, advertise the businesses and educate the youth. – Rahim, market trader
