What we got up to over Black History Month

The Rosetta Arts team were busy over Black History Month, we hosted two events and one exhibition reflecting on different aspects and themes in relation to Black, British history and heritage.

Spoken Word Art & Culture

We hosted a spoken word workshop, talk and performance by Asante King, and facilitated by Kylie Winfield exploring Art, Identity and Culture for young boys aged between 10-16 years old. Through this workshop young people had an opportunity to learn about the Windrush Era and the impact this had on modern British history.

Channeling Caribbean Artists by Gilliane Lawrence – Corridor Gallery

In response to a textile workshop held at Stratford Library in August exploring the work of Trinidadian born designer Althea McNish, artist Gilliane Lawerence of Ragworks felt inspired to create a body of work in response to the themes discussed during the workshop, her work was exhibited at the Corridor Gallery throughout the month of October.

Pottery Workshop

Participants explored portraits and paintings by Claudette and used her work as inspiration to create 3d sculptures from clay. The workshops were facilitated by Jenny Schrowder, a ceramist and textile artist. The workshops form part of a wider and ongoing project called `Women of the Windrush’ which explores the stories and the experiences of ‘ordinary’ women who arrived in the UK between 1948 and 1973 and their UK born descendants.

Special thanks to the Department of Levelling Up Housing and Communities and the London Borough of Newham for funding these events.
