Young Makers spotlight: Mandy and Hanna

Our new Young Makers term begins on 25th May 2021. Here, two previous participants to see what they enjoyed about the course. Find out what Mandy and Hanna had to say below and, if you’re 12-16, sign up here to join the next term – free art kits provided and no prior experience needed!

Mandy

Please tell us a bit about you, starting with your name, age and what you like to do in your spare time.

My name is Mandy, I am 13 years old and I really enjoy doing art in my spare time. I also really like dancing and horseriding. I find these activities really motivating and calming.

How did you find out about the Young Makers workshops / I Design My Future project?

I have been part of previous workshops, so I found out through Aisha and my friends who are also part of the project.

What did you enjoy most about Young Makers? E.g. any specific sessions, making new friends, having the art kits delivered etc., and why?

I am very sociable, so I made a lot more friends. Also, the project was very admirably adapted for quarantine. I think having the art kits delivered was a really good idea as I didn’t have to stress about having the right supplies.

How would you say the workshops have made you feel?

Confident, motivated and calm. The tutor, Aisha, was really nice and supportive and didn’t mind if we made mistakes. She also really motivated us and let us ask as many questions as we wanted. I have worked with her before and she’s always been really nice.

What do you think you have achieved? E.g. new art skills, new friends, improved communication skills etc.

I have a much better understanding of different types of art. I think having different types of art lessons was really helpful. I also made a lot more friends and I have a lot more skills in different art forms (tile-making, fashion design, filmmaking).

Was there something new that Young Makers encouraged you to do that you hadn’t done before?

I hadn’t really worked with clay before, but now that I’ve tried it, I think I’ll do it again. Young Makers has really pushed me out of my comfort zone which I think is great because I discovered a lot of new things that I enjoy doing.

Anything else you would like to tell us?

Not really except for the fact that this has been a really fun experience and I would definitely do it again. Everyone in the group is really fun and supportive.

Hanna

Please tell us a bit about you, starting with your name, age and what you like to do in your spare time.

My name is Hanna. I am 13 and I love to paint, dance and bake. I enjoy experimenting and creating art.

How did you find the Young Makers workshops?

I found them a nice way to spend my time and express myself.

What did you enjoy most about Young Makers? E.g. any specific sessions, making new friends, having the art kits delivered etc., and why?

I enjoyed making illusions and the colour wheel and using clay.

How would you say the workshops have made you feel?

Motivated and calm. Before, I didn’t know how to do some of the things we covered in lessons, but now I do and I am motivated to do more in the future.
