Meet Sylvie, a Rosetta student and volunteer

Sylvie Ganachaud lives in Newham and is a mother of eight bright young children. Her long standing interest in photography brought her to Rosetta to study our Level 1 Photography course which she enjoyed so much she went on to do Level 2:

Joining the Rosetta photography class was a life changing experience. I was at a low point emotionally and it enabled me discover a part of myself I didn’t know; it helped me develop my confidence – a year ago I would have never gone in central London let alone with a camera! And it gave me hope that I could one day have a job opportunity within the field. Of course, mainly I’ve been having lots of fun, have met amazing and supportive people and our friendships have lasted way beyond the course.

“After the level 2 photography finished, staff at Rosetta asked a few of us to volunteer to take photographs for the new website. With a friend from the course assisting me, I took many portraits of staff, board members and volunteers. We had fun during the photo shoots and it was a great learning experience, and seeing the photos across the site has been a good sense of achievement.

“Since then I have started doing portraits sessions – I did one recently for a book cover and at a charity event. I’m also working on developing a portfolio of wedding photography, which may lead to new job opportunities. Street photography is another area I have started to pursue and I’m planning a project about the people of Newham. And I also had some of my photos of the Newham Swords Fencing club in the Newham Recorder (flick to page 42). I’m so glad I took that step and I’m so ever thankful to Rosetta, my beautiful teacher and fellow students!”
