The Young Creative Newham Board of young producers has been on an incredible journey with Rosetta Arts in developing projects for Newham Heritage Month 2020.
The board consists of seven young people who live in the borough of Newham and are actively engaged and interested in culture.
They have selected and commissioned four projects to form part of this year’s Newham Heritage Month, which spans the entirety of June and takes place online. As well as being part of the commission selection committee, they are also evaluating project submissions.
Newham Heritage Month runs from the 1st to the 30th of June. The aim of the month is to explore what heritage means and bring local residents closer to their own heritage through art. The projects selected by the Young Creative Newham Board with links to their workshops are:
These all involve incredibly talented local artists and organisations, who are providing residents with workshops and activities throughout. Their work ranges from textiles and music to technology, arts and crafts, and much more! Newham residents can expect a diverse programme of fun, interactive and rewarding activities.
A couple of our Young Producers have also talked about their experience of taking part in the programme in a dedicated blog post here!

Newham Heritage Month is organised by London Borough of Newham with support from National Lottery Heritage Fund and Royal Docks.
What did the Young Creative Newham Board say about being involved?
‘Having the position of power to make a difference in people’s lives through the heritage projects and events we have selected, and giving people in Newham an opportunity to express themselves while creating diversity, is very rewarding.’
‘Heritage, for me, is a concept of home: finding where you belong and exploring not only your roots but others too to the point of feeling secure and safe, so you feel pride in where you came from.’
‘I really enjoyed choosing the events and having such nice people around me. It was really nice getting my voice heard and others supporting each other’s ideas. It is a really interesting experience for young people like me.’
‘I am incredibly happy about being able to ask people questions and evaluate the whole event as it has given me skills I can use in the future.’
‘Newham is a really interesting community as there are people with diverse backgrounds and each person probably has a different story to tell.’
