Summer Be Creative! sessions for ages 10-16

If you’re aged 10-16 and live in Newham, you’re invited to sign up to Summer sessions in our Be Creative! programme. Some sessions allow participants to join sessions after the start date so enquire for details.

Bookings should be made directly with the Newham Youth Centres.

Forest Gate Youth Centre

Sessions available at Forest Gate: Photography, Dance  and Mindful Arts. Book directly with Forest Gate Youth Centre.

1. Fashion, Styling & Merchandise (Photography)

Tutor: Trisha McCauley
Weeks: 6
Hours: 2hrs
Start date: Tuesday 25th June
Time: 4.30-6.30pm

Acquire a basic foundation in photography, fashion and styling within a studio and on location.

  • Learn the technical skills, functions and settings of an SLR (single lens reflex camera)
  • Understand how to operate studio lighting equipment
  • Plan a photoshoot on location
  • Gain an introduction to product and merchandise (still-life) photography.

2. Mindful Arts

Hours: 1 hour
Time: 4.30-5.30pm
Date: Tuesday 16th July 2019

Explore art and mindfulness using a variety of dry mediums: chalks, pastels, pencils through experimental drawing techniques, doodling and sketching.

3. Dance

Tutor: Susan King
Theme: Afro Dance
Weeks: 5
Hours: 1 hour
Time: 4.30-5.30pm
Start date: 23rd July 2019
End: 20th August

Explore contemporary dance through Afro House and Soca music. Work together to choreograph a performance piece to showcase to friends and family.

  • African and Caribbean dance moves, steps and rhythms
  • History, context and origin of African dance
  • Choreograph a short performance.

Beckton Globe Youth Centre

Sessions available: Film-making, Mindful Arts & Music. Book directly with Beckton Globe Youth Centre.

1. Film-Making

Theme: To be decided by the young people

Time: 4-6pm

End: Tuesday 6th August 2019

Be introduced to the five stages of film-making:

  • Development
  • Pre-production
  • Film shoots
  • Post-production
  • Distribution

Have the opportunity to develop your own theme to explore and showcase work to friends and family in the Youth Zone or in The Humble Gallery at Rosetta Arts. Work closely with the participants from the music workshop to develop a sound-track to accompany the short film.

2. Mindful Arts
Theme: Mindful Arts (one session only)

Working in collaboration with the film-making group, create musical scores and soundtracks to accompany the film. Gain an understanding in:

  • Electronic Music Production (EDM)
  • Composing lyrics
  • Basic music theory
  • Soundtracks

Little Ilford Youth Centre

2. Art & Drawing (Manga/Expressive Art)

Inspired by street art, manga and graphic novels, learn how to:

  • Design and create a story-board
  • Draw manga inspired characters
  • Maintain a sketchbook
  • Develop your own unique drawing style.
