Course overview
This 10-week course is designed for intermediate learners who want to take their oil painting further. Together, we’ll discuss your ideas, the techniques you would like to challenge yourself with, and the parts of your painting and personal project you’d most like to develop. This course is a great opportunity to expand your creative painting techniques with support from artist Soo Hyun-Lee.
Alongside your own project, you’ll learn how to apply gesso, stretch a canvas, and make your own oil paint from raw pigments. This gives you a deeper understanding of how oil painting materials and techniques work together, and how different choices can create different effects in your final piece.
By the end of the course, you’ll take home one completed oil painting, along with test pieces and technique samples you’ve created along the way.
Weeks 1–2 : Share your ideas and plan your personal project together, and get hands-on with materials: applying gesso, stretching your own canvas, and mixing oil paint from pigments.
Week 3 : Explore core techniques through small test pieces, experimenting with colour, texture, and brushwork to find what suits your project.
Weeks 4–8 : Begin your main painting, developing it step by step with personal guidance and plenty of space to grow at your own pace.
Weeks 9–10: Add the finishing touches, refine your work, and complete a final oil painting to take home.

About the tutor
Soo Hyun Lee is a London-based visual artist who works with painting, video installation and performance. She graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London with an MFA in Fine Art in 2024, and holds a BFA from Korea University, Seoul. See her work on Instagram: @todayisoohyun.

Improvers and intermediate learners.
Some prior oil painting experience is needed - you don't need to be an expert, but you will need to have an idea of the basics.
The course is for adults aged 18 and over. It is non-accredited.

Mondays, 6:30–8:30pm, for ten weeks:
8 February, 15 February, 22 February, 1 March, 8 March, 15 March, 22 March, 12 April, 19 12 April, 26 April 2026.

Location
Rosetta Arts, 1 Hamilton Road, London E15 3AE, in Newham, East London. Sessions are held in the ground-floor artist studio, which is wheelchair accessible.
Frequently Asked Questions
- General Policy: We do not offer refunds once a purchase is completed.
- Accidental Purchases: Refunds are only available for accidental enrollments reported within 48 hours of purchase subject to a processing fee.
- Late Requests: No refunds will be issued if the request is made within 14 days of the course start date (e.g., if a course begins on April 14th, the final day for an eligible accidental refund would be March 31st).
- Once a course or workshop has begun, no refunds or credits will be issued under any circumstances, regardless of attendance or the date of enrollment.
